About Us

Hi! Thanks for checking out our Africa with Kids blog. In case you’re wondering who we are and whether we really know what we’re talking about when it comes to travelling to Africa with kids, we thought it would be a good idea to introduce ourselves and let you know all about our passion for Africa and how we can help you plan your family trip to Africa.

About us

We are a family of 4 from the UK made up of Jacs (Mum), Ed (Dad), Ernie (12) and George (10).

I (Jacs) developed a passion for Africa after watching Out of Africa and went on my first safari when I was 24 and was hooked.

Ed is half South Africa and has been travelling to South Africa since he was a young boy.

Ernie is a keen biophilic (I looked this up and it means nature enthusiast!).

George is a generalist about Africa. He can’t decide what to specialise in!

Ed and I met and discovered our shared love of Africa and decided to quit our jobs and take a year out to travel. We backpacked overland from Uganda down to Cape Town over 4 months. Our route enabled us to see the gorillas in Rwanda, attend the Lake of Stars festival in Malawi and we did several luxury and self-drive safaris in between.

We visited Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia and South Africa via public transport. It was such an incredible experience.

Here we are in 2010 in Damaraland where we got engaged and then again in 2023 when we brought the kids back to the same spot.

Our first family visit to Africa was when the kids were quite young. Their first safari was when they were 2 & 3 years old in South Africa. We chose South Africa because it is such a great country for families to visit. There are a huge range of family safaris in South Africa, a lot of which are malaria free. See here for tips on taking kids on safari as well as what to pack for a family safari.

With Ed now working in the safari industry, all of our family holidays are to Africa and as a result we are always adding more information to this website.

We like to share our honest experiences and travel tips with you to help you discover Africa with kids.
